1. My visit to Kwatisore Village

Though the name is hard to pronounce, Cenderawasih (Bird of Paradise) Bay has become well-known amongst divers for its incredible marine biodiversity. While many travellers come here for the whale sharks, the nearby village of Kwatisore really stole my heart.

You can find beautiful landscapes throughout the world, but what really makes travel special, I believe, is the people.

The people that we met here, and throughout the islands of West Papua and the Spice Islands, were some of the most beautiful, kind and joyous people I’ve ever encountered. From the children that approached us on the beach, to the locals who welcomed us into their villages with songs and dances, the hospitality shown to us foreigners certainly left an indelible mark on our hearts.

3. What can I see there?

Kwatisore Village is a peaceful, traditional Papuan village surrounded by dense forest and turquoise sea. Life here revolves around the ocean—most locals are fishermen who use floating wooden platforms, or bagans, to catch small fish that attract whale sharks. Visitors can experience the village’s warm hospitality, learn about local customs, and see how traditional fishing and modern conservation efforts work hand in hand to protect marine life.

Kwatisore combines seclusion, unspoiled beauty, and incredible marine biodiversity, making it a standout destination for expedition travellers.

Diving and Marine Life

Unlike the more frequented sites of Wayag or Misool, Kwatisore remains largely undiscovered. Its crystal-clear waters and protected coral gardens make it one of the most remarkable diving and snorkelling locations in Raja Ampat.

5. Tips for planning your visit

Best time: Whale sharks can be seen year-round in Cenderawasih Bay, making it one of the few places in the world with such consistent sightings. The calm waters near Kwatisore Village, close to Nabire, are especially known for daily encounters, where these gentle giants gather around traditional fishing platforms, or “bagans”.

The best time of day to visit Kwatisore Village is early morning. This is when temperatures are cooler for exploring the village.

What to pack: For a walk through Kwatisore Village, pack light, practical items:

  • Breathable clothing and comfortable walking shoes or sandals for uneven paths

  • Hat, sunglasses, and reef-safe sunscreen for sun protection

  • Reusable water bottle to stay hydrated

  • Insect repellent

  • Camera or smartphone for photos

  • Small local currency if you wish to support villagers or buy souvenirs

Keep your pack minimal to move easily through the village and along the shoreline.
